    The Monarch butterfly

To visit the biosphere reserves of the Monarch butterfly, it is important to understand the phenomenon and cultivate a critical awareness of the threat imposed by human activities in Canada, Mexico and the US. This incredible insect weighs less than two grams and its long distance migrations cover several generations during a year.

The Michoacán monarchs in Mexico for instance migrate 4,000 kilometers from the US east of the Rockies. They encounter inclement weather natural predators and the destruction of habitat in Canada, the US and Mexico.

That they are threatened has become evident in the last year by the reduction of hibernation sites from 12 to 7, and the reduction of population in the remaining sites by 25% as noticed during frequent observations of the sites during each cycle.
