Americans Cut Down on Driving By Over 9.6 Billion Miles This Year

Due to the high costs of gasoline, Americans have suddenly gotten a newfound interest in cutting down on unnecessary fuel consumption. The result is, Americans have driven over 9.6 Billion miles less than last year. Public transportation and carpooling have increased greatly. Many Americans are turning to riding bikes or walking to cut down on the extreme costs of gas powered vehicles. People are consciously cutting back on unnecessary driving. And as a result, our environment becomes less polluted. It's amazing the results a little squeeze on the pocketbooks of the masses can have.

Let's face it, all the well wishing environmentally friendly ads and incentives just haven't been working very well. Even with all the programs to try to reduce fuel consumption and get people to use alternate transportation, the general public simply hasn't cared enough to change their habits. But what millions of tax payer dollars couldn't change, a little fluctuation in the gas prices have accomplished brilliantly. It just goes to show that the average American isn't nearly as interested in the environment as he is in his wallet.

I guess some good can come out of a little forced fast from our fuel consumption. So much of the world is controlled by money. Money speaks louder than words. The checkbook is mightier than the sword. It's sad, yet so painfully true. If this fuel crisis gets much worse, we could actually be forced to start manufacturing those alternate transportation methods we have the technology for, but our society has been deliberately sabotaging.
