Facebook Gets Group Chat and Video Calling Thanks to Skype

When Google announced Google+ Facebook was quick to fire back with some news of their own. Facebook announced today two new features, group IM chat and video calls. The video calling feature is thanks to a little company by the name of Skype, perhaps you have heard of them.

The video chat feature is integrated right into the chat list. You simply select someone to chat with, hit the camera button at the top of the chat window, and you're on your way. The video pops-up in a separate window so you can drag it around the screen and you can even select the active microphone without having to restart the chat.

The first time you video chat you have to install a plugin but other than that there is no setup or usernames to deal with. The video quality and connectivity of the video calls should be pretty good considering it's using Skype's technology.

The group chat works just as you suspect it would. You open a chat with one of your friends, you click "plus" button at the top of the window, and select more friends to add to your chat. It's that simple. Both of these new features will be rolling out over the next couple weeks, but if you want to try the Video Chat feature now you can go here and set it up.
