Possible Hotel / Motel Scam

This is a scam that is being circulated via email and possibly on the internet. Not sure whether it is true or not, but it is best to err on the side of caution.

You check in to a hotel or motel while traveling and settle in to your room. You receive a call on your room phone from someone who says that they work at the front desk and ran into a problem when trying to process your credit card. They ask that you please read them the card number and verify the 3 digit code on the back. You might be thinking that you are actually speaking to the front desk clerk and you give them the information.

Turns out that the person you just spoke to was a thief who called the front desk and asked for some random room number which happened to be you. The front desk transfers the call to you and if you answer, you are immediately asked this question.

How would you handle this situation if you were presented with it at your hotel? Let the caller know that you will come down to the front desk to straighten out the problem and do this only if you are sure that there is a problem. Most front desk personnel would have mentioned a problem to you while you were checking in, not call you on the phone later.

Just some insight to help you avoid a costly mistake.
