  • Volunteering tutor time

I've long been aware of the importance of parental involvement in their child's school--some say it's the single most important parenting step to ensure a child's success--but this is the first year I've been able to to get involved through volunteering tutor time. It has turned out...

  • Raising butterflies from caterpillars, Part 3

If you read my earlier posts, you know my little boy and I have been trying to raise Eastern Black Swallowtail butterflies from caterpillars. Sadly, we haven't had a lot of success yet. We started with three caterpillars, but lost one in the car before we even got home. The second one built its chrysalis...

  • Raising butterflies from caterpillars

I blogged a couple months ago about the tadpole project my son and I undertook. It was a lot of fun for us both—at first. We watched with great excitement as 50 or 60 slimy little tadpoles turned into 50 or 60 slimy little toads. And then the algae started rotting, and the tank started stinking. Then...

  • Summertime Blues

Today is my boy's last day of school. He's looking forward to staying up late, sleeping in, playing in the pool and doing kid stuff. But he's going to miss his kindergarten teacher, as will I. She's been ideal for us as parents, and for Jack as a new reader and sometime-behavioral challenge...

  • Re: Opposites in Parenting

Parent says: I mean it! Child thinks: She doesn't mean it yet. Parent says: Goodnight. I love you. Child thinks: This is the perfect time to tell her what happened at school, and to hear another story, and to sing another song, and to go to the bathroom, and to get a drink, and to kiss the dog goodnight...

  • Opposites in Parenting

Here are some opposites we have seen in the parenting world and what they really mean Child’s Interpretation: Dinner Sandwich and cake Naptime Lay down while singing and playing Quiet A little less noisy than loud Clean up Leave it somewhat chaotic, but not as bad as dirty Listen What did you say? Walk...

  • I caved

The ongoing saga of Jack: It really did seem cruel to deny Jack the Mommy time we'd planned, and sometimes I think backing off all the punishment and allowing for a time to be close again does more to improve behavior than all the denied privileges. Do I sound like I'm making excuses for myself...

  • He did it again!

Jack's on red again! This time the little yellow note says when all the kids were lined up to go to their karate class, he got out of line and sat down at one of the computers. When he was told to get back in line, he said that was the only place he was allowed to play computer games, and refused...

  • A new perspective

Jack's in trouble again. This time the little yellow note from his after-school dojo says he wouldn't stay in his seat, but usually the notes say he wouldn't stop talking, or clowning around. I think it's all pretty typical 6-year-old boy stuff, but a couple weeks ago we freaked out when...

  • Kids Say the Darndest Things

I have already heard some cute and funny things kids have said in some of these posts. I would love to hear more. What are some of those moments when you just had to choke back laughter at some of the things kids have said in front of you?
