I suggest knocking your opponent over the edge of the level before you use it. That way, you'll have time to complete your transformation, and you'll also be able to chuck your armor at an while it's recovering.

Switching Between Samus and Zero Suit Samus

As Samus, you can drop your suit and turn into Zero Suit Samus with a taunt. On the Wiimote, tap 1,2,1,2 over and over very quickly. It's hard to get the timing right and I'm still working on it. But if you pull it off, your suit will break down and you can throw the pieces at enemies. I found it a good way to start a battle because you can do some serious damage with a well aimed throw.
Samus: Basic Techniques

Samus hails from the Metroid series. She is a futuristic bounty hunter with an arm mounted cannon and some incredible armor. She has good agility, and a powerful arsenal of long ranged attacks. Her biggest downside is her weak close combat abilities. She is a heavier class fighter and can take a real beating before going down.

Standard Special Move: Charge Shot

Her main weapon is the cannon mounted in her right arm. Tapping the B button will unleash a stream of tiny energy balls that can damage and interrupt your enemy. Holding down this button will start her charging a bigger energy ball. You can fire at any time to unleash the blast, or shield to hold the charge at whatever level it currently stands at. If you let it charge to its max, it will stand by at maximum power until you fire it. You can tell your gun is fully charged because it will flash with a tiny blue light. Tapping the button again will unleash the blast.

Side Special Move: Missile Launcher

Samus packs an endless arsenal of missiles to compliment her energy cannon. Holding down a direction and tapping B will fire a heat seeker missile in that direction. It will follow your opponents for a short distance and explode on contact. She can also fire a more powerful Super Missile that will travel quickly in a straight line.

Down Special Move: Bomb

Samus can roll into a tiny ball and drop round bombs that will roll on the ground for a few seconds. This can give you the upper hand when someone is waiting under you to juggle you in the air. You can also scatter bombs on the ground when you just need someone to back off and give you some breathing room.

Up Special Move: Screw Attack

This move functions as an attack and a recovery move. Pressing up and B will cause you to vault into a somersault with a boost from your rockets. You will spin quickly and create an energy field around you that damages any opponents you touch. It is a good way to get back on the edge when someone is waiting for you.

Grapple Beam:

Samus also has an energy beam that can be used as a grappling hook. Pressing R on the ground will emit this beam sideways, grab your opponent, and pull them towards you. You can also use this in mid air to do a little damage to your opponent. You can also use it to grab onto a ledge and pull yourself to it. This takes a lot of practice and it's a dangerous technique, but it looks really cool when you pull it off.

The Story of Samus

Samus is a female bounty hunter who wields a high tech alien space suit that gives her extreme agility and firepower. Samus made her debut on Metroid for the original Nintendo. She has been exploring alien planets on subsequent games for nearly every Nintendo system since.

She was orphaned at a young age and adopted by the Chozo, an ancient and wise alien race. They trained her and entrusted her with their most prized technology, her armor. She used this gift and the training they gave her to become one of the most powerful bounty hunters in the galaxy. She discovered the Metroids on one of her missions and found her fate and the fate of the universe forever entwined with them.

Metroids are alien creatures that have a thirst for energy. After destroying their home world, Samus brought one specimen back for scientific study. Soon afterwards, the Metroid was stolen by the evil space pirates. They soon started mass producing the creatures and breeding them. In Metroid Prime, Samus learns that the Space Pirates are infusing them with Phazon to cause them to mutate and evolve. One of their prize test subjects, known as Metroid Prime, grows astronomically in intelligence and power. It manages to infuse itself with her other armor suit and becomes Dark Samus. Now she must face a creature with superior intelligence, amazing firepower, and the desire for total domination of the universe.

Samus made her debut on the first Smash Brothers where she was employed to exterminate more serious infestations of more menacing creatures such as Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Yoshi.

Switching to Zero Suit Samus at Any Time

You can switch to the Zero Suit
at any time during a match without needing a final smash. You can also
start with the Zero Suit if you hold the proper button when starting
the match. When I heard about Zero Suit Samus, I was thrilled to find another
Sheik-like character to play with. When I realized that you have to use
a final smash to drop your armor and use the Zero Suit, I realized how
hard it would be to make full use of this character. Considering how
rare it is to actually get a smash ball, the Zero Suit seemed like it
would be seldom available...Until Now.

Switch to Zero Suit Samus during battle:

Press Up Taunt, Down Taunt, Up Taunt Quickly.
If you use this button combination quickly enough, you will drop your armor and switch to Zero Suit Samus.

Start a match with Zero Suit Samus:

On the character screen Select Samus and hold the appropriate button before the match starts:
Wii Remote/Nunchuk: Hold the Z Button
Classic/Gamecube Controller: Hold the R Button
Wii Remote Sideways: Hold the (-) Minus Button
If
you hold it down just after the match is selected until your character
appears, you should start the match already in the Zero Suit.
