    Burglar Fails Miserably

Crowds gathered to publicly mock John Pearce as he hung helplessly in the window of an apartment he attempted to rob on August 22nd. The man had smashed a window and somehow gotten tangled in it on his way through. It is unclear how exactly he managed to get stuck, or why he was upside down in the first place. He was left hanging upside down by his shoelace for over an hour while a crowd gathered to poke fun at him. Police and paramedics finally managed to pry his foot free and carted him promptly off to jail.

The burglar originally claimed he was trying to stop another burglar from breaking in, but the fact that he was still holding the hammer in his hand and screaming to be let down didn't help his case. He later pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and will be sentenced in September.

Personally I think being made a laughing stock in front of the world is very fair punishment. Hopefully he will realize that he's a really bad burglar and find a new career path.

Yeah, that is punishment in and of itself. It's basically like spending an hour in the stocks. But what I wanna know is why it took over an hour before someone got him down.

First of all I got the impression he was pretty badly tangled up there considering he couldn't seem to free himself, even with that hammer. But realistically, if you saw a burglar hanging upside down like that, what would you do? I think I'd bring out the lawn chair and pass out popcorn. Sometimes poetic justice is just too good and you have to savor the moment.

Hah, talk about poetic justice indeed! Maybe it took over an hour to get him down because they wanted to teach him a lesson in humility when you do really stupid things like breaking into someone else's home. Moron! And hey, pass the popcorn! Wink

A wise former middle school teacher of mine used to say, "If you're dumb, you gotta be tough." I think that's profoundly applicable to this burglar, if not to burglars in general.

Just wanted to let everyone know that it took over an hour to get him down cos he was being really violent and was throwing shards of glass at the police.  They had to wait for another group of police officers to arrive with shields to protect themselvesin order to release him from the window and make the arrest.  I know this as I was there!  It was most amusing to watch.  His pride was really hurt and I imagine that the blood rushing to his head after all that time handing there must have given him one hell of a headache!

You were there?! That's awesome! How close did you get to the burglar? Were you one of the people heckling at him? Most importantly, how did he get stuck like that in the first place?

Wow, that is absolutely amazing! I'm honored to have an eye witness on our forums. The news stories never seem to get things quite right so it's great to hear it from the perspective of someone who actually saw it! I guess with enough people standing around him he must have been pretty embarrassed and angry so I can see why he was so violent. I would love to hear any more information about the whole situation.

It is me (name different cos I couldn't remember my log in and had to create a new password!)

I didn't actually see how he got trapped, I was walking up the road and saw all the commotion. there was a huge crowd.  At first I thought it was a dead body hanging but as I got closer I could hear him screaming and when I heard that he was a trapped burglar I stood and watched (and laughed) with the rest of the crowd.  I went home just before they released him to make sure that he hadn't broken into my house too (he didn't).  I don't have any more to tell other than I was there!
