Keeping Dogs From Begging at the Dinner Table

Do any of you have dogs that beg while you're eating dinner? My beagle will whine and cry every time she smells food. And if you don't pay attention to her, she gets steadily louder until she is barking at us to feed her. So I have been trying to break her of this habit. When she begs, I give her food... food she HATES. Any kind of lettuce, broccoli, onions, peppers, oranges, lemons, or other foods she can't stand are fair game. If she begs I just toss it to her. She catches it in her mouth and by the time she realizes what she's eating, it's too late. After doing this a couple times, she decides the food we're enjoying just isn't what she wants and she stops begging.

I also sometimes will give her peanut butter to keep her busy. She LOVES peanut butter and goes absolutely crazy just smelling it. So I take a bit on my finger, distract her, and tap it right on top of her nose. She has to lick it off, and it takes her a while to fully get it cleaned.

My dog begs at the table, but she's pretty good about leaving when we ask her too. It's not like we don't feed her enough. She always gets treats and dog food. I should definately try that out though.. she really hates veggies. :D

SHE LOVES PEANUT BUTTER. Have you ever tried putting peanut butter on the inside of your dogs lip, right above her teeth?  It's hilarious. I that's what they did for that really old tv show about the talking horse.. or at least that's what i've heard.

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from.

We have a dog that isn't annoying with begging, but she will sit there and steadily watch you eat and she will start drooling. If it takes you long enough to eat, a puddle of drool will form at her feet. If you happen to be eating while sitting on a couch or bed, she will drool on your legs until you push her away. When I look at her ever-hopeful warm brown eyes, I can't resist giving her a taste.

Our other dog is very polite about it. No begging, barking, or drooling. He'll sit down beside you and very gently place his paw on your upper leg. Just to remind you that if you are of a mind to give out some food, he will gladly accept it.

Computers are like dogs. They can sense fear. You must BELIEVE that they will work.

My chocolate lab used to stare at you and breathe really hard when you would eat. He was so huge you could actually feel the condensation of his breath on your feet or wherever he was facing. If this kept up long enough you would actually feel your feet getting wet. If I sat next to him too long I could feel the oxygen in the air dropping and I'd get a little out of breath. He was quiet and polite but I almost preferred the little whiner.
