    The Ultimate 2-Man Team

My brother and I love team battles. In Smash Bros. Melee, we would give ourselves handicaps and train as a two-man team against two level 9 computer players. Consequently, we put a lot of thought into generating challenging opposing teams, and as our opponents got harder, we had to find new combinations of characters to play as in order to combat them. After trying a number of characters and strategies, we found that we were almost invincible in team battles as Peach and Yoshi. We just kept a constant stream of flying eggs and turnips, and if our opponents managed to penetrate our wall of projectiles, we would either instantly KO them, send them flying back to the other side of our projectile wall, or deal them a combo of coordinated physical attacks that they would never forget.

However, with the addition of lots of new characters, I'm not sure if Peach and Yoshi are the best possible team for Brawl. Which characters do you think would make up the ultimate 2-Man team?

    Re: The Ultimate 2-Man Team

Ahh those were the days. I remember going up against the best champions at FSU and completely mopping the floor with the two characters that no one ever took seriously. There's something so satisfying about watching someone slowly fall to their death as a stream of turnips and eggs keeps launching them further and further down. I also loved how we would pick on just one enemy and kill them long before their partner died. Once he was alone, I would grab him and hold him while you beat the tar out of him, and once he had about 400 damage, I'd kill him with 1 slap.

So I haven't tried it but I wonder how you would do with 2 Pits teamed up. If you did it just right, you could hold his spinning wheel of blades to cover each other's bodies and make it almost impossible to hit with physical attacks. You could coordinate arrows to nail people from far away, and both use his shield to deflect projectiles. When someone came close, you could rip them up with a blaze of daggers. I'll have to try this out and see how it goes. It may not work well on human players, but computers are much easier to fool.

What might be even better is a team of Ike and Pit. If the two stuck together, Pit draw enemies by sniping, and when they approach, he could act as a shield for Ike using his spinning Blades. His blades--or any of his weak, fast attacks--would incapacitate the enemy just long enough for Ike to KO them with a smash attack or a charged B attack. Ike could also defend Pit because his insanely long blade could strike down charging opponents just before they reach his comrade.

Ike is slow, lacks ranged attacks, and is vulnerable to fast opponents, but he's great for KO's. Conversely, Pit is fast, has good ranged attacks, and can easily counter enemy forays, but he's lousy at getting KO's. In short, the two characters working as one would perfectly complement each other, and as long as they could hold their ground, they would be invincible.
Nonetheless, they would only invincible while holding their ground. They wouldn't be as good on large or moving levels or against a sniping team. Peach and Yoshi, for example, could overwhelm them with projectiles and force them to go on offense. Once on the attack, Ike would have a lot of trouble penetrating the projectile wall, and Pit would have to leave him behind. Peach and Yoshi could then single-out Pit, take out all of his lives, and leave Ike staggering helplessly between eggs and turnips.

That's a really good idea. I'd like to see two foxes or fox and wolf shooting everyone down before they could even get close. Fox's laser will hit you fast for constant damage, and wolf can blast you back and give you just enough bounceback to keep you from getting close. Both of those guys can quickly dash into someone when they come in close or smash them hard for a KO. Also if you send someone flying, they can use their up B moves to dash into them and keep them bouncing around in the air without being able to come down.

I wonder how it would go if you had Zero Suit Samus and Sheik together. You could jump around and confuse enemies so badly with all your acrobatics that they wouldn't know what to hit. With both of their whips in use, it would be hard to even get close to them if they stood back to back.

My brother and I have taken out Fox and Falco teams before, but they're really hard to beat; I think Fox and Wolf would be even harder. The Starfox characters are great for long-range battles on flat levels because they can deflect projectiles and send a constant stream of laser fire your way. They'd be especially deadly if one of them acted as a shield while the other sniped. But they only have a long-range advantage on a few flat levels like Final Destination, so characters with non-horizontal, long-range projectiles can usually out-snipe them. Of course, it would take forever for you to deal them any significant damage by sniping because of their down-B shields.

A Starfox team could be the ultimate rival to a Peach and Yoshi team; it would be a serious uphill battle for the Starfox team, but they could win if they coordinated their movement well enough. For starters, they could penetrate Peach and Yoshi's wall of eggs and turnips if they both charged at the same time; this way, one could deflect the projectiles while the other one, hiding behind his comrade's shield, protects his vulnerable ally from physical attacks. Still, even if the Starfox team could consistently get through the constant stream of eggs and turnips, Peach and Yoshi's defensive prowess is a good match for the Starfox characters' incredible offensive abilities. If the Starfox team coordinated their attacks well enough, though, they could dispatch Peach and Yoshi before they could solidify their projectile wall.

Hmm I wonder how Pit and Fox would to together. Pit's arrows do some good kickback and fly fast but they can curve to hit enemies. I also remember doing really well with a Fox/Peach team between my brother and I. Their abilities compliment each other very well and allow for some serious damage at close range, and good sniping. Pikachu and Fox may be really good as well. Pikachu's electricity splashes along the ground and follows surfaces, so he can hit people all over. The two of them are very fast and agile and would be quite hard to fight. So I'd say fox is just all around a good teammate to have.

    Re: The Ultimate 2-Man Team

Great idea! They'd be perfect for close-range and mid-range damage dealing. They'd be great for rooting opponents out of defensive positions, especially if they mastered their common down-A aerial dropkick, which, if properly coordinated, could overwhelm just about any ground-based team. Their only real weakness would be sniping opponents, so I think Peach and Yoshi would beat them. Of course, Zelda and Samus are great for returning fire.

The team might be better if one of the characters was replaced by Sonic. As long as you have Sonic, you hardly have to worry about Snipers because he's impossible to hit, and his B moves are perfect for stunning adjacent enemy snipers and ending their stream of projectiles just long enough to let a fast ally charge into the fray and cover him. His rapid ground moves would nicely complement Sheik or Zero-Suit Samus' slightly slower mid-ranged attacks, and if he stayed close enough to one of them, the sweep and range of their attacks would provide him the cover that he normally lacks. Also, Sonic shares Sheik and Zero-Suit Samus' down-A aerial dropkick, so he could easily replace one of them in an aerial battle. Sonic and Sheik or Zero-Suit Samus would make the ideal team for breaching enemy defenses and projectile walls, and if they happen to face opponents with impenetrable defense, Samus or Zelda could try to snipe them out.
