    Smallville Relationships

Just this weekend my girlfriend and I finished Season 1 of Smallville. It always amazes me how deep and rounded the characters are. Each character has their own unique personality with their own strengths and weaknesses. They all have such interesting interactions as well.

Clark slowly develops his friendship with Lex Luthor (who we all know as his evil arch nemesis). Strangely enough, Lex is mostly a really great guy, and he's an extremely good friend to Clark. He's the one who's always there for him, and always does what's just and honorable. By the end of season one we see him just starting to show some hints of manipulation. He also becomes obsessed with the meteor showers that brought Clark to our planet, and seems to always be prying into the matter. This further alienates him from Clark's father who hates Lex's family for their corrupt business. Clark finds himself always caught between his father's hatred for the Luthors and the genuine friendship Lex extends.

There is also an intriguing love triangle between Clark's friends at school. You end up with Clark Kent in love with Lana, who is dating Whitney but seems to have feelings for Clark. Then Clark's friend Chloe is totally obsessed with him. It's always so frustrating because each time Clark and Lana get close, Clark has to either run off to save someone, or go and do the right thing to not steal her from Whitney. At the same time Clark is torn between his new friends and staying true to his best friend, Chloe. It really wraps you up in the characters and makes you start to care about them. The end result is you keep coming back for more.

Most of the movies/TV shows I watch come from Netflix. I have the Smallville series in my queue at the moment. I had doubts about ordering it because the show centers around teenagers and I'm almost 40. I didn't know if it would hold any interest for me. However, the reviews on the Smallville series on the Netflix website were very positive and I'm more encouraged to hear positive things about the series from a "real" person.

    Re: Smallville Relationships

I always watch TV on Netflix. It's so much more convenient than weeding through endless commercials. It also saves 10-20 minutes for each show when you take off the commercials. When you add that up, you end up saving entire days of your life.

One thing I don't put too much emphasis on about Smallville is, he's SUPERMAN. So you get a lot of entertaining mutant freaks for him to beat down in the middle of his teenage drama. It always intertwines his superhero life with his character building real life and the two planes collide. And even if you can't identify with the kids, you may identify with his wise and loving parents who painstakingly and carefully mold his character into the hero he is. Let's face it, if he didn't turn out to be a good guy, the whole world would be in big trouble. Imagine if Superman grew up to be some emo kid who didn't care about anyone, or some kind of criminal.

Let us know what you think when you get a chance to watch it. And don't be too upset with me if you end up hooked on the series.

    Re: Smallville Relationships

I just saw the season finale of the current season and now I think I have at least 5 previous seasons to catch up on. So glad I have NetFlix. Thanks for the summary on Season 1, Mike. Maybe I can start with watching Season 2...

I'd personally recommend starting with season 1. There is so much character development involved and so much is explained when you start from the beginning. I think we're all going to clean out the netflix warehouses of Smallville if we keep this up. If I had only known what I was missing I might have actually watched some TV when it was on the air.
