A company called Coskata has been working on a process to produce ethanol from waste such as lawn clippings, wood chips, garbage, and other products that would normally pile up in landfills. They are working on a bioreactor that uses anaerobic bacteria to break down this biomass and convert it into ethanol. My car will run on regular gas or on ethanol. It gets fewer miles to the gallon when running on ethanol and the cheaper price of ethanol did not make up for the loss of miles/gallon. If they can make the ethanol fuel much cheaper than regular gas, I will gladly switch back.

Well, if these bioreactors hit the market and work as well as they project, we will be able to fuel our cars with just waste products. They say they can even use the excess heat produced by the bioreactors to to fuel things like paper mills and other industrial processes. This could represent a huge shift for the better in our environment.
