Scientists have developed a new eye implant that may allow blind people to see. Early trials have given their patients the ability to perceive light, shapes, and movement. The eye normally takes in light, focuses it on the retina on the back of the eye, and the retina transmits an electrical signal to the brain, which is interpreted as an image. Many blind people have damaged retinas that do not function and therefore can't transmit images. This implant reads the image from a tiny camera, processes it, and stimulates the optic nerve to send a picture to the brain. More tests are scheduled but scientists are very optimistic with the early results.
