    Do your parents know?

Working at an after school program, I see a lot of kids. They each have their own way of doing things and saying things and such because they each come from different families... naturally. So, working with kids I notice a lot of tendencies that really show what kind of parents they have. Kids, of course, are very bad about saying things that they probably shouldn't as well...

Here are a few quotes from just recently..  I'll add some later, so check back every once in a while.

kid 1 (age 7): "I play halo when my parents are sleeping! it's rated M!"
kid 2 (age 6): "oooh really! My parents don't even care! I play rated M games all the time!"

    - What would their parents say?

    Me: "what's wrong??"
Kid: "My parents don't loooove me"
    *kid runs off to play*

    -What do I do??

*different kid runs up to me crying*
Me: "oh  no! what's wrong? are you hurt?"
Kid: "noo..." *pouts* "My mommy said she loves me with allll her heart!!!"
Me: ".. um... how is that a bad thing?"
Kid: *angry look* "That means she doesn't love my brother!!!!"

-I love the logic of chillin

    Re: Do your parents know?

That is so funny. It must be a pretty sweet kid to be so upset that his mommy might not love his brother though. My sister is adorable and has such a precious heart. She always means well but sometimes it can be a bit much. I was sleeping over at my family's house one night and curled up on the couch in my brother's room.

I was about to fall asleep when I heard *BANG BANG BANG LET ME INNNNNN!!!!!!!!* at the top of her lungs. When I opened the door she came in quietly and delicately and almost in a whisper said "here, I brought you a pillow..." She picked up my head and shoved the pillow under it very uncomfortably, then said sweetly, "goodnight...." and very quietly let herself out.

I was just about to readjust the pillow so I could get comfortable again when I heard *BANG BANG BANG LET ME INNNNNN!!!!!!!!* and she quietly came back in with a pillow sham and said "here, I brought you something soft" and draped it over my head, so I could barely breathe. I was choking back laughter when she let herself out again with another sweet "goodnight....".

I was trying to figure out if I should take the pillow sham off when I got another *BANG BANG BANG LET ME INNNNNN!!!!!!!!* "here, I brought you a flashlight so you won't get scared". She turned it on and propped it against my head so it shined right into my eyes. And she said  "goodnight...." again.

So by this time I had a pillow craning my neck, a pillow sham smothering me, and a flashlight blinding me. But she thought she was just being really sweet and taking care of her big brother.

    Re: Do your parents know?

It's funny how kids will help you even when you really don't want to be helped--ie, when you're carrying in groceries and they want to help and end up congesting the hallway to the kitchen and almost tripping you every couple steps and exciting the dogs and getting them to jump all over you while your fingers are about the fall off under the weight of too many Wal-Mart bags full of heavy cans. And if you absolutely refuse to accept a kid's "help," it doesn't change anything; they just insist harder. It's like they value the warm-fuzzies of feeling helpful more than they value actually being helpful, or at least that's what my experience with kids has taught me.

I think they key here is the idea of being helpful. Little kids mean well and just want to be a help to know in their hearts they're doing something good. The thought probably never crosses their mind that they might actually be making things much harder. My sister especially loves to help people in any way she can. She's a little kid with a huge personality and sometimes I don't think she takes into account that she's not actually as strong as I am. I'm just glad she's such a sweetheart. At least she means well, even when it does get somewhat difficult.

As a parent, my favorite is when my little one comes up to me trying to show me how badly her finger is hurt and I can't even see the injury, but I must treat it or I will crush her little heart. Inside, I can't help but laugh at this "alleged" cut. Bad mommy!

Oh wow, I can relate to all of you guys. For one, my brother and sister are both 3 and are always trying to help out. I love when my brother tries to carry my purse for me when the purse is probably just as heavy as he is! He likes to put the strap around his neck and lean back, it's so cute. Next time it happens I'll take a picture. :)

Parker, you can only imagine what kind of "injuries" happen at my job. Just yesterday I see two boys, literally, picking up this girl who is sobbing a river. They set her in front me of and she starts holding her leg like it's going to fall off.. I look at the leg and there's NOTHING! Once we put the magic band aid on her leg she ran off like nothing happened. Who ever owns Band-aid must be loaded!

OH, you are so right! I can only wish that I had invented them. I have to carry a handful of them with me everywhere I go just to be sure that I can make everything better. So, Krazy Koala, no matter how "Krazy" it might drive you, just go with the program and fix it with a bandaid and I mean everything...

    Scenario #1

    -"mommy, my tummy hurts"
mommy will get you some medicine and make it all better
"no, that's ok, it doesn't hurt anymore"

    Scenario #2

    -"mommy, my tummy hurts"
mommy will get you a bandaid, there is that better?
    -yup, thank you!

    (LOL)

HA!!  It's so true! Also, ICE!  They always feel better when they have some ice, even if they end up eating all of it... they always forget they were ever hurt.

One of the things we have to do when a child gets hurt at the after school program is fill out an accident form. For some reason we're not allowed to use anything other than soap, water/ice, and band-aids when a child gets hurt... so one of things we put next to   [application used for injury]  is TLC!

Nothing works better than some Tender Love and Care.... / band-aids/Ice

Ok.. the other day was pretty much one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. I felt like such a bad person even though I was kidding. This little boy was digging through my purse and playing with my cell phone and asking TONS of questions.. you know.. exactly what little boys do all the time :).. well, he started complaining about everything too. That's something that kind of gets annoying, especially on that day.. it was beautiful and there was no reason for this boy to be complaining..

Little Boy: I wish my mom was here!
Me: I wish your mom was here too!

I turn around and... HIS MOM WAS THERE!

I don't think she heard me.. she was smiling and didn't seem surprised..

    >.<  oi

    Re: Do your parents know?

My son is finally old enough to help with some of the groceries--toilet paper, paper towels etc.-- but after he's done with that stuff, he has other actually-very-helpful jobs.

    1. Hold the door.
    2. Bring my purse in from the front seat.
    3. Put the canned goods away in the lower cabinet.
    4. Stuff the grocery bags into a grocery bag and take it back to the car for recycling later.
By the time we're at the last step he's usually over it!
    Hope that helps!
