Cultural Synopsis

Greetings,

Mike and others have asked about the culture here in Israel. It is a pleasure to respond to this, because Israel's culture is very rich and varied. Some have characterized Israel's cultural life as reflecting that of a "little America", but there are Israelis who are not particularly fond of such a description.

We have here anything and everything you can think of, culturally speaking. There are the arts, entertainment, social events, music, sports, and culinary delights, as much and as fine as anywhere else you would think of in the world. And in each category, there is a really large variety to choose from.

Israel is a very vigorous modern state, always on the go, and always ready to adopt more practical methods of accommodating both its citizens and visitors. There are things to do here for everyone, old and young, and there is always something going on somewhere that is within traveling reach.

Being a native New Yorker myself, I naturally drift towards the cultural variety that NY has to offer. Here, homogeny is definitely not the rule. Israelis differ broadly in their tastes and preferences and, to use a dining example, if something isn't on the menu, it will either be there the next time, or someone else will invent it at a different location.

The state is relatively young, but it has no doubt been taking some giant steps forward throughout its short history. And with its ancient past as a people, dating back thousands of years, the collective experience amassed over the years has ensured a considerable wealth of cultural diversity.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Till the next post ...

I will admit, when I used to think of Israel, huge New York style cities didn't really come to mind. I looked at some pictures of Tel Aviv and was amazed to see what a vibrant and big city it is. It looks much like some of the bigger cities we have in America in a lot of ways.

Would you be interested in posting some pictures of your city on a photo gallery on Blogiversity? I can set one up for you if you would like. I would personally love to see more photos. I hope to post some pictures taken around my city as well.

Mike, we would be glad to post some TA pics.

Should we set up our own photo gallery for our blog?

Is a photo gallery specific to a blog, or is it just a general location where others can add photos as well?

Photo galleries are like a separate blog for sharing pictures. You can write a little about the pictures and turn each into a sort of mini blog post. You can see the current photo galleries in the "Photos" tab at the top of the page. I have posted a few photos in my gallery of Tallahassee Florida, where I live.

I created a photo gallery for you. Let me know if you want me to change the name of it. You will be the only one allowed to post in your gallery. You can access it here: www.blogiversity.org/.../default.aspx

If you would like to go through a quick tutorial on how to use the photo galleries, head to the Blogiversity Help forums here:

www.blogiversity.org/.../135.aspx

If you have any questions, I'm always happy to help. I'm really looking forward to seeing your pictures. I will try to post more pictures of my home town when I get a chance.

Thanks a lot Mike! Tallahassee looks real nice. Never been there.

We never really took pictures of Tel Aviv, but rather only the area of the park where we live. But we did take a lot of photos of different parks, lakes, and areas we visited.

A few days ago we went to a place called "Utopia" near Netanya. It was really like paradise, with beautiful indoor and outdoor gardens. They really did a great job with it.

We're real busy now, but soon I hope we can start filling the gallery you set up for us.

Thanks again,

Reuven

That would be wonderful. I always feel like I have been to a place when I get to see a lot of pictures of it, but it's hard to get the full effect from a traveling photographer. There's something of the culture and spirit of a place that can only be caught on film by someone who has lived there for a long time.

Once again I did some Googling and Utopia really does look like paradise. It reminds me of a place called Calloway Gardens in Georgia. This is where my parents went on their honeymoon and we visit there from time to time.

I completely understand about being busy. With all the business around us, it's hard to find the time to blog. I heard there was a major Jewish holiday coming up soon as well. I went to a Seder dinner with my Jewish friends and I really enjoyed it. It was so moving to be part of such a rich culture's traditions. It really amazed me the deeper meanings behind all the traditions we witnessed. Also the food was delicious and the people were so friendly. We ended up staying up talking to them until about midnight (on a work night). I would love to hear about some of the other traditions in your culture when you get a chance to write again. We will be eagerly awaiting your next post. Until then, Shalom.
