MailTones for iPhone – get custom email notifications

Something that has always kind of bothered me about the iPhone is that you can only choose from a small number of sounds to notify you of emails and SMS messages. I am not that partial to any of them  and I would like to add my own if I could but you can't.

MailTones does not let you add your own mail notification sounds but it does give you the ability to choose from 31 different tones. MailTones also allows you to assign a tone to a specific contact. You can also assign a tone to a specific subject line or domain.  Lets say you only get urgent and important emails from a specific address or contact. You could assign a loud and long mail notification to that contact that way when the important message comes to your inbox you won't miss it.

It does not replace your current mail client so you don't have stop using the Mail application on your phone. MailTones only makes the notification sound that corresponds to the sender, subject, or domain of the emails. In order to make MailTones work you have to forward a copy of all your email to a special email address at mailtones.net. You can do this on the server side by setting it up on your email hosting site. Most if not all email hosts allow you to forward mail to another email account.

The application is $2.99 which seems reasonable considering they have to maintain a server that will process all your mails and send the appropriate tone to your phone. I don't feel I have a need for an app like this but I can see why I might in the future and why others would have a need for it now.
