Apple Acquires Placebase a Google Maps Competitor

So it seems that the rift between Apple and Google is become more and more apparent as Apple acquired a Map making company back in July that has been a Google Maps competitor from the start. It seems that Apple is trying to free themselves of your Google dependence. The iPhone and iPhoto both rely on Google Maps. Google even helped develop the Maps application for iphone.

So it seems that Apple has bought Placebase who has a Map product called Pushpin. Pushpin has been around for a while and the only reason it’s still around after Google Maps took off is because pushpin has concentrated layers and overlays for their map system.

I don’t know if they have a website for pushpin or not. It seems they have API documentation on how in embed a pushpin map but they don’t have a website that can just show you stuff on a map. Some of the features of Pushpin are pretty cool and could make for some interesting products.
