Iphone Tethering with AT&T without Jailbreak or Torrents

The internet has been a buzz about the new iphone 3gs. I have to say that I’m very excited to see it come out. The internet also has been talking about the fact that AT&T is at this point in time not supporting MMS or Tethering on the iphone.
Since AT&T is the only carrier of the iphone in the US the US is SOL when it comes to tethering. I found a blog post that showes you how to enable the tethering capabilities on your iPhone 3g.

Now I have not tried this because I’m still sporting the first gen iPhone, but the worst thing that would happen is that you have to restore your iphone’s carrier settings which takes like 5 seconds.

On a Mac:

Open terminal and paste in:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Hit enter, it’ll look like nothing happened… but it put iTunes into a testing mode that lets the rest work.

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.
1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image

2. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering. Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

There you have it. I have been hearing that this may prevent you from using your visual voicemail and the MMS but if you don’t like that you can restore your carrier setting but holding down option+restore button in itunes and getting the original carrier file in this folder   /users/yourusername/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/ in that folder is the original .ipcc file that should fix the visual voicemail problem but will remove the tethering. ☺
