Quick and Easy Mail lists on Mac OSX
Monday, December 29, 2008 4:55 PM
Making good use of mailing lists can save you time and can prevent you from leaving people out. Some mailing lists are simply an e-mail address that then forwards the e-mail to other people on the list. The mail list feature on Macs is a little bit simpler.

In order to create a simple mailing list on a Mac all you have to do is open you address book and create a new group. Make the name of the group something descriptive to describe the mail list. If you want to make a mailing list of all your family members then just call it family. Once you have created the new group and named it now all you have to do is drag and drop the contacts that you want in the mail list.

To use the mailing list all you have to do is start a new e-mail and in the to:  box start to type the name of the group you created. It will auto fill just like the other contacts would. When you have selected the mailing list just hit enter and all the contacts in the mailing list will be added to the message.

This is great if you send e-mails so several people often. Makes sending e-mails to large groups of people a breeze.

Tiltshift app for iPhone
Thursday, December 18, 2008 2:44 PM

I read about the TiltShift app for iPhone and I was intrigued. Tilt-shift is technique where you use a specific type of lens to blur the surroundings of an object in order to make it look like a miniature model. It's a cool effect and fun to play with. The iphone has a little application that allows you to emulate this by applying a filter to the photos you have taken to achieve the miniature effect. I have some samples of some that i did but I'm afraid that they aren't that good.

Okay so this is a screen shot of the app. The Pics button allows you to select a picture to work on and the save, saves the image to your camera roll when your done with it. The other buttons are different ways of viewing the select tool. The goal is to place the circle over the object you want to appear miniature. you can change the shape to the parallel lines as well to get a different effect. The Bar at the bottom controls the amount of blur that is applied to the photo.

Okay so I'm not good at this and Maybe it's not the best picture to do this one but I think you get the point.

Okay this is really what you are going for.It helps if the photo has objects that are big but are small in the picture. The effect makes it look really cool.

How to Send Large File to Friends for Free
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 2:49 PM

Pando is a great little application that allows you  to upload files to their server. Pando then sends the recipient of the file a little tracker file that they open in their Pando program. Their program downloads the file and you're done. This program is great if you are trying to send a large number of photos to someone and you can't e-mail them.

A lot of people e-mail photos but they have to be small in order to fit them all into one e-mail. Or you will see people send large photos in multiple e-mails in order to get them all sent. The e-mail protocol is not really designed to send files that are that size. They take a long time to get to the recipient and clog their mail while it waits to download your big e-mails.

They also have Pando channels that have video from different Podcast like shows as well as videos from the Onion and other websites that are media based.

Pando is great and it’s free. Give it a try.

Best Free OSX Applications – Must Have Mac Programs
Friday, December 12, 2008 5:23 PM

Here is my list of the best free programs that I have found for the Mac OSX. These programs are awesome and you should get everyone of them. Okay on with the show.

Adium – Great little application that’s a multi-client instant message software. The skins are customizable and it works with all your IM names and accounts. One of the cons of the software is that you can’t use any video or sound features like some other IM programs. I think it’s a great program however and I can’t live without it.

Website: http://www.adiumx.com/

Skype – Skype is what I use to videoconference and audio chat with my friends. The Video chat features work a lot better than ichats. I have been really pleased that I have been able to connect with people and video chat with them when I havn’t been successful with ichat.

website:  http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/

VLC Player – This is a great media player that works well and will play just about any media file. It is really powerful and is worth the download. It will allow you to watch your videos in full screen unlike quicktime unless you have the pro edition. VLC will play more media types then quicktime too.

Website: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Cyberduck
– FTP program that will manage your FTP connections. I like this application because it’s simple and easy to use and it’s free.

Website: http://cyberduck.ch/

Chicken of VNC – VNC program that allows you to remotely login and control your computer remotely. It’s a very light program that doesn’t have that many features but hey it works and it’s free.

Website: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/

AppZapper – This program will ensure that all the files associated with a program gets deleted when you delete the program. All you have to do is drag the application into the window and Zap it takes care of the whole family if you know what I mean.

Website: http://www.appzapper.com/

Update: I just found out that Appzapper is no long free that it's like $12 and the download able version only lets you zap 5 programs and then it stops working.

FireFox – Best browser is the universe get it love it. NOW!

Website: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

Perian – Plugin that gives Quicktime the muscle to play many more kinds of video. Like that of the fallowing.

flute app for iphone - Ocarina app for iphone
Monday, December 08, 2008 5:12 PM

The ocarina application for the iphones allows you to play the ocarina which is a anciant flute like instrument right on your iphone. All you have to do is blow into the microphone and sound comes out the the speaker. there are four buttons on the iphone so you can change keys.

The cool thing about this little application is that you can actually play music on it. They have a whole website dedicated to finding sheet music on how to play specific songs. I thought that was really interesting. I posted some of the sheet music below for your.

This is where you can go and get the sheet Music if you would like to find other songs Ocarina sheet music.

Friday, December 05, 2008 4:35 PM

Have you ever wanted to know if it's possible to shoot a hot dog with the bun a couple hundred feet? Well The Phillies have just that a Big pneumatic hot dog launcher. I thought they just shot the actual meat but this thing actually shoots the whole hot dog. I found this video it's a documentary on the hot dog launcher. It's really not anything special to shoot something out of a pneumatic cannon but shooting something like a hot dog is completely different. You have to figure our how to get the hot dog in the stands in one piece. That is the trick.

Netflix Instant Watch Finally on Mac and Firefox
Thursday, December 04, 2008 5:18 PM

Netflix has finally changed the plug-in for their instant watch feature to Microsoft’s SilverLight program which is kind of like flash but is designed to deliver streaming video much better that whatever they were using before. Now that Netflix is using SilverLight you can download the plug-in on your Mac and even play the videos in Firefox.

Before this upgrade you had to use windows and internet explorer 7 only. That was the only option. I have a Mac so I had to run windows virtually just to be able to watch “instant watch” movies on my Mac. Well that’s all over now so yay for the new instant watch.

Netflix has developed other ways that you can watch their “instant watch” movies. You can now buy either the Netflix Roku or other devices to instantly stream the movies to your TV. You can also use your Xbox to instantly stream your movies from Netflix.

How to Create Multiple User profiles in FireFox on Mac OSX
Tuesday, December 02, 2008 3:51 PM

I was wondering the other day if it's possible to create multiple users for Firefox within the same user account on a Mac. Of course after a little research I found someone who had a tutorial but I thought instead of just linking to him I would try and show you maybe a little bit better than him. Okay here we go.

 Step #1 Create New Profile

In order to create a new profile you have to use the terminal to launch the Profile Manager. You can't access the Profile Manager menu any other way. So you will need to open Terminal to do this. You can either type the word "Terminal" into spotlight or go and get it into the application folder under utilities. Here is the Path.

Applications << Utilities < < Terminal

Once it opens type copy and paste this in the terminal

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin --profilemanager

then hit enter.

After you do that the profile manager will pop-up. This is where you add your new profile. When you create your new profile don’t put a space in it because it seems to mess things up later. The profile name is case sensitive so make sure you remember exactly what you called it capitals and all. The great thing about having multiple profiles is that it allows more than one person to have settings on the same computer. Or you could have one profile that has all the Internet plug-ins and toolbars and one that does not.

When you’re done with that click exit and it should close the window. Here’s the deal, you could stop here which allows you to launch Firefox and just choose which profile you want to use. If you want to use both of them at the same time or have separate icons for the different profiles then it gets a little trickier.

Step #2 Create Specific profile launching icons

To get icons the will launch Firefox in a specific profile you have to create a script that will do so. You will need to open the “Script Editor” which can be either typing “ Script Editor “ into spotlight or finding it in the applications folder here is the path.

Applications<<AppleScript<<Script Editor.app

After opening the script editor you will need to paste in a line of code. Don’t worry if you have no idea how to use the script editor just paste this into the window.

do shell script "/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -P profileName"

here is what it should look like:

Where it says “profileName” you will need to put the profile name you created. I made the profile named “Light” so my line of code will look like this and don’t forget the caps.

do shell script "/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -P Light"

Now click “File” << “save as” and name it something. I chose something like ffLight but once again don’t use spaces. In the “File Format” dropdown save it as "Application Bundle" and the click save.

Your icon is ready now all we have to do is tell it not to ask what profile to use by modify a file.  Right click on the file your created, mine was called “ffLight” and select show package contents then select “contents” folder and find the info.plist file. Open it in Textedit and insert this bit of code

<key>LSUIElement</key>
<string>1</string>

Just below this bit of code

< key>LSRequiresCarbon</key>  <true/>

Like this:

After you save it and you’re done. Just click on the file your created and it will launch Firefox using your new profile. You can run this side by side with your other profile. If you don't like the little script icon you can change it to any icon you want. If you want it to look like the default Firefox icon all you have to do is right click the FireFox application and select "get info". click on the firefox icon at the top left of the screen and then hit Command + C to copy it. then do the same thing to the script file you created but hit Command +  V instead of C after selecting the icon.

Hope this help if you have any questions send me a line at will@willthethrill.net
