Stuff White People Like

There's  a   peculiar   blog  called   stuffwhitepeoplelike.com .  This  blogger   pokes  fun  at   the  tastes  of   white  people  in  a  tongue-in-cheek  manner.

A  recent  post  discusses  classical  music,  and  has  gotten  over  200  replies  so  far,  including  one  by  yours  truly.  Supposedly, people  who  go  to   orchestra  concerts  and  the  opera  etc,  don't  really  go  because  they  like  it,  but  because   it's  a  "white"  thing  to  do,  because  they  like  to   make  themselves  look   "cultured"  and"educated".  (I'm  paraphrasing, sort  of).

Yes,  this  is  a   tongue-in-cheek   website,  but  some  of  the  responses  show   unbelievable  ignorance  about  classical  music   on  the  part  of  people  who  know  little  or  nothing  about  it.  Many  of  those  who  responded  seem  to  take   what  the  blogger  wrote  seriously.  Check  it  out  for  yourself.  I    responded  by saying   that  while  I  realize  that  the  blogger  is  basically  kidding,   that   if   audiences  didn't  really   enjoy  concerts,  they  would  have  stopped  going  long  ago,  and  all  our  orchestras  and  opera  companies  would  have  gone  out  of  business.

Some  professional  musicians  actually  did  respond  to  defend  classical  music.  Good  for  them.

I love that site. I was telling some of my black friends to go there. A lot of the things that they say on the site are so true in a funny stereotype kind of way. Of course most people will go to hear classical music because they actually like it. I am sure though that there are people that my go and not actually enjoy it that have the thought and feeling that they are more intellectual by going. Classical music does have that upper class kind of feel to it.
