  • Psychology Rebecca's case

Education played and important role in Rebecca’s treatment. During her visits we had spent some time teaching her about the role of scripts in human behavior and also of the emotions related to scripts, including destructive emotions such as shame, anger and fear among others.

During sessions we discussed her behavior patterns and the family situations in which specific patterns appeared. A careful analysis of each patterns and of the emotion related to it, as well as of the strength of each emotion in guiding and determining behavior was part of the therapeutic plan. I wanted Rebecca to understand how thought and behavior patterns are part of a script and how they started to form and develop. This was necessary since our goal was to change Rebecca’s scripts as well as her thinking process (part of the script too) which we sought to make rational and flexible and capable of adjusting to reality demands.

This first part of the therapy leaned more towards education. I had explained to Rebecca that the most difficult part of the treatment comes later on when she was to change scripts models in real life encounters.

  • Rebecca's case

In her last relationship Rebecca had been involved for some time with Steve a journalist two years younger, than her. He visited her irregularly and almost never took her out. Although she liked him and was eager to start a serious relationship committing herself to it; Steve had told her he needed more time to make up his mind, claiming that at this point do to his job and many responsibilities he had little time to dedicate to the relationship.

At one point Rebecca accepted an invitation from a girlfriend to have lunch at a restaurant in a crowded mall near her place of work. After ordering she found to her surprise that at a table not too far away from hers, indeed only two tables away, there was Steve with a younger women. Steve was holding the younger woman’s hand and appeared delighted with her company.

Rebecca got up and walked to Steve’s table greeting him with a friendly smile. He was quite taken by the surprise and treated her as if she was only an acquaintance.
