School Zones and Work Commutes
Friday, May 29, 2009 3:40 PM

Well, school ended in our county today. That means that from now until the middle of August, we can drive to work and on our lunch breaks without those flashing yellows! Don’t get me wrong, I am the first one to complain if someone speeds through a school zone. I recall at least one small child killed this year when they were hit by a driver while going to school. The driver was being cautious, it was just one of those bad situations. I just feel like Monday will bring a quicker commute to work (no buses, school carpools or moms toting kids to school). Yes, many will be toting kids to summer camps, but that is not nearly as bad as far as traffic goes in our city.

I think I like it when school ends because I go through 2 school zones on my way to work each day and it really slows the commute. I also time my business errands in between dismissal times so that I can avoid having to slow down during times when I am really pressed for time.

I just came back from running a few errands and it was so nice to be able to drive the normal limit the whole time (the kids all got out early today).

To all my neighbors, ENJOY!

Jon & Kate Plus 8
Tuesday, May 26, 2009 2:17 PM

We started enjoying watching this family not long ago because we thought they were, well, fun to watch. Being a parent of two and watching parents of 8 and their struggles (lack of sleep; dealing with constant noise & crying, etc) helps to make things a little bit easier to handle. Just knowing that someone out there has 8 young children to raise shows you that you can raise a few and have nothing to complain about.

When I first started watching the show, I wondered why anyone would be willing to let a camera crew film their everyday lives and put it on television for the whole nation to watch! Then I started picking up on the fact that this was the mom’s career…promoting a book she wrote about her life as a mom of twins and then sextuplets. She also travels to promote this book and their family. They started off when the children were very young, but the new season started out with the youngest children turning 5 years old and the parents are apparently separated, or close to it. This is a sad turn around for this family oriented show. It was such an encouragement to see this couple raise their children together and now that they might not be together any longer, it changes the entire dynamic of the show.

I know that this is mostly the fault of the media, and some relationship issues with the parents are also to blame. Don’t know that I’ll be tuning in any longer, but I do hope that they can settle their problems, at least for the sake of the children. If not, life goes on and they will be ok.

Weird Florida Weather
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 2:54 PM

So, it’s the month of May, right? And yet outside our Florida daytime HI is only 66 degrees! It was just as cool yesterday and being that I didn’t check the weather in advance (I assumed it would be the same HEAT we have been experiencing every day) I just thought it was a fluke. But it happened again today. I am writing this around 3:00pm and it still has not reached 70 degrees.

Is there a name for this cool weather in the summer? I’ve heard of El Nino, does that apply to this? Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining as it has gotten close to 90 every day for quite some time. This just feels wrong. I’ve noticed several people commenting about it just because it is so unusual. Thought it would be neat to use this blog to document that it actually did happen, so that when we shoot back up to 90 degrees with 100 plus index, we can remember this week and that it was real.

Panacea Blue Crab Festival
Thursday, May 14, 2009 2:47 PM

Our family and some friends went to the Blue Crab Festival in Panacea this year to enjoy some fun in the sun and some great seafood. Although I am very sensitive to being in the sun too long, this was well worth it! The Blue Crab Festival offers all sorts of fun outdoor activities, along with great seafood (and other foods for those who don’t care for it). I for one, enjoy eating crabs when I get the chance and this was the perfect event to do so. I believe it is held once a year, but we have missed it for years because we always hear about it after it’s over. Well, not this year. We heard about it the day of and we were ready to go. Hopefully, if you live in the surrounding areas, you can check it out one year. I think it’s only one day (Saturday) and it’s most likely held around the same time every year, so we’ll be on the lookout for the next one (this one was back on May 2). There is a website for it that shows where it’s located and what it’s all about at: www.bluecrabfest.com. There is a parade, music, contests and water fun for the kids. Just a nice getaway for a day.

Tallahassee Pink Slip Party
Tuesday, May 5, 2009 10:11 AM
The local business owner of Eventions decided to host the first Tallahassee area Pink Slip Party. I attended (as a recruiter) and felt that the event was a great idea for those who have either lost their job and were looking for a new job or opportunity for income, or for those who were graduating college in the area and looking for the same. Media coverage was quite extensive as well. Personally, I saw stories about the event, prior to its being held, in the Tallahassee Democrat, on WTXL and on Twitter/Facebook in our area. Sponsors of the event included: Club Rayne; Smooth Jazz 97.9; American Classifieds and more. Many local businesses provided door prizes as well. The event was hosted at Club Rayne and from what I could see, was quite a success. Many employers and recruiters were there to greet the friendly faces of those who needed to secure an income fast. Resumes were critiqued on site, and massages were available as well. I gladly would have had one of those, however, I was quite busy meeting and greeting attendees and was able to meet a few that I might be able to work with in the future. All in all, the night went well and my congratulations to Eventions for yet another great event. The next one will be held the night of Tuesday, June 23, 2009. From what I hear, seating is limited for this one, so respond early to ensure that you can attend. You can find out more at: www.tallypinkslipparty.com or by calling: (850) 222-0200.
