Grocery Shopping: Individual vs. Family

How do you prefer to do your grocery shopping? Do you like to go by yourself and do you save money that way or do you spend more?

I like to go alone, because I get in, get what the family needs, and get out. When I go with the family, it seems that the grocery bill increases by, let’s say, 100%! Mostly because of our small children, who don’t have the slightest clue as to what a budget is. That want to buy everything and now I see why grocery stores place certain products at their level. To make sure they don’t miss out on the opportunity to beg their parents for it. Do we give in? Of course we buy some of what they ask for, not nearly all of it, but enough to do some damage.

The crazy part about all of this is what happens a few days later. You have gone shopping, you have put away all of these groceries and then the kids come to you hungry. So you naturally say: “why don’t you grab some of the (insert snack here) that you asked for at the store until we get dinner made.”

Guess what the response is? “No, I don’t want any of that.”

Now don’t get me wrong, if they ask us to buy it and we were not going to buy it in the first place, they do have to eat it. I am just baffled by the fact that they don’t want what they asked for. Do you ever buy groceries and not want them later on? I don’t mean a certain day where you just don’t feel like eating it, I mean EVER!

Oh, the joys of parenting.
