Everyday on my drive to work, I pass a house with a "Short Sale" sign in the front yard by the "For Sale" sign. I assumed it meant that the owner could close quickly, but now I am better informed. Having been through selling a house myself this year, I feel sorry for all of the home owners that are trying to sell right now. It is a bad situation. Our realtor said we would have to do everything that the buyer wanted if we wanted the sale to go through. It was grueling and depressing.

This is going to come in very handy now that the economy is going down the tubes. I almost feel bad for Obama because he may well be the most hated president in history, regardless what kind of job he does. Everyone blames the president for the condition of America and things are not looking good right now.

Renting isn't so bad right now. We have had to call the homeowner several times to do major repairs (non-working fridge; AC no longer cooling) and we got out of paying for those!

Glad I could help. I'm just now going back to doing the shopping and cooking for my family, and I'm feeling a little competetive--comparing my grocery spending and quality of our meals to my husband's. Do you have any tips of your own you'd like to share?

I made a big meatless salad before work this morning, and will have it for dinner tomorrow night and for lunches the next couple days. No meat, just 4 legumes, feta cheese and assorted veggies. We'll be going meatless at least once or twice a week.

If I shop when I'm full, I usually need to go back to the store in a week or two. When I shop hungry, I'm usually set for most of the month.

I like shopping for what seems appealing at the time because I tend to crave foods rich in nutrients my body is running low on. With food prices rising, I may need to go back to planning menus and setting a strict food budget again.

and, to add to your list, i can think of one more way to save: switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet. not only will your grocery bill go down, your health will go up.

While I have a feeling a large portion of Americans will go out and spend money, just as we're expected to, those of us who save wisely will be reaping the benefits later.

Personally I'm putting my check back into savings to help build up that backup bank account that I never feel quite safe without. The first step in success is being prepared for failure.
