It is rush time to copy the BIO 120 notes onto CDs. We are having many issues with this so if you need help copying these files, please let me know. For now, let me tell you about some of the quirks you may encounter. Once you start the burn process, you get the message that says "drive not accessible": if you get this message please close it and you should see that the burning is actually taking place. The second common error you might receive is "files could not write to this CD, error!!" If this happens, try the whole thing again and it usually works. ALSO: please get in the habit of checking to see if the files are actually ON the CD and can be opened and viewed. Do not assume they are there. Open them up in the program they are with, like powerpoint or word. Thanks!

To all staff: please, please, please remember to write a note and let me know when an overdue item is returned. In cleaning out my overdue file today, I discovered several overdue items that had been turned in that I had not received a note on, and one billed item -- for the latter, it is essential to either give the patron an Account Status Change form or let me know so I can issue on and unblock their record upstairs at the Cashier's office.
Leaving me a note, e-mail, voice-mail, etc. helps me keep on track with my overdues.
Thanks!

FYI...We may have some students from Glenda Harrison's Political Science class come in looking for a CD on reserve for her class. This CD is not on reserve in the LRC this semester, even though it is stated in the syllabus that it is.
Thank you,

Hi Everyone,
We now have Power Point Viewer on all of the machines.
Lettie Vosotros has put 3 CD's on Reserve for students to view. They may
run the CD on the Public Computers to view her Powerpoint.
If a student wants to burn a copy of this Powerpoint Presentation to their
own CD, there is a copy of Lettie's Presentation in the following folder.

BIO120-Vosotros
We have had the best success with burning CDs when using the 'Station
3 Computer', but you can do it from the other stations.

Ok, I will try to make this as clear as possible. If you have any questions please ask Linda or me.
McTeer will be sending in some of her students (12 of them) to the LRC to find a video or dvd to transcribe. She likes the Abbott/Math Study Skills videos. Examples are How your Brain Works, Math and Test Anxiety, etc.
I think we should try to steer them towards the Math Study Skills videos, but she did say that they could choose any subject as long as it was some type of instruction or self-help video or dvd.
Once they find the video or dvd they need, they can take it to one of the video viewing rooms to transcribe.
I hope this is clear.

If students need help with returning evaluation forms,
send them to IC 103.
This office is right next to the Switchboard/Mail Room.
Students may slide the evaluations under the door or give them to: Lance Renner or Stacy Burton
Thanks,
Linda

We have a new procedure regarding overdue notices -- recently we've had several patrons inform us that they returned an item to the LRC, only to receive an overdue notice. The item was not checked-in properly, and placed back on the shelf, so Millennium still views the item as checked out and overdue, even though it is "back home".
In order to prevent this, we will have a check for overdue items each day. One individual will be assigned this check each day, and it will be their first
priority during off-desk hours.
I will print overdue notices and then give them to the person assigned that day, who will then check the shelves and the shelving truck for the items. If overdue item(s) are found, they will be checked-in and the overdue notices discarded. If the items are really overdue, then the slips will be returned to me and I will process them as per our normal procedure.
The weekly assignments are as follows:
Monday: Tracy
Tuesday: Ashley
Wednesday: Lisa
Thursday: April
Friday: Becky
Hopefully this will prevent some "overdue" items from falling through the
cracks.

I found a note on my desk this morning for a student who had returned items that were 48 days overdue and billed -- please make sure that if a student returns a billed item that you fill out an Account Status Change form -- if the student drops off the item(s) and leaves, please leave the form for me.
Thanks!

Two more MSU books were found on our shelving cart, instead of the SWAN/MOBIUS shelf for processing. Please make sure that all SWAN/MOBIUS books are not placed on our shelving cart. Some SWAN books may not have blue bands, so check for a property stamp somewhere on the book itself.
Thanks!

When you put a reserve item back on the reserve shelves, please make sure that you are putting it back in its proper place. Example, this morning I found a Gerard reserve book in Hosmers reserve stuff. This is very important because not everyone will think to look in other instructor's reserve items. Customer service is our priority. :-) Side note...I am still in the process of cleaning up the reserve material so that I am ready to send out notices in a few weeks to all instructor's who have reserve material. It is my hope to clean up the reserve section so that everything is current and easily accessible. I am open to any suggestions that you might have in regards to the reserve section. :-) Thank you, Amy Landon

Guess what? The LRC has purchased two new iPODS. We have one nano and one video ipod. There are a few universities and public libraries around the nation experimenting with using ipods in their institutions. Why shouldn't we? Some of the initial ideas revolve around reserves, such as the AAC videos that could be converted into just an audio format. Other possible uses include showing pictures from art or humanities courses. And above all, the most obvious is with music. Either the Music courses on campus or a way of student's sampling our CD collection. The possibilites are endless because the ipods can be used with images, music, audio, and video. So I would like to hear your thoughts on this whole idea. After Mike returns from vacation next week, let's try to sit down and brainstorm all the ways the iPODS can help the students. This will also be a great time to 'play' with the ipods because they are SUPER COOL. So if you are interested in brainstorming uses for the ipods, let me know. :-)

If an OTC student, faculty or staff member should ask for an item to be held for them at the service desk to pick up at a later time, please place a hold on that item in their record on Millenium and place it on the holdshelf. This way we have a record of the item and its current status. Make sure that there is a sheet or post-it-note (securely fastened) with the item with the patron's name and other information.
The holdshelf is for all OTC, SWAN and MOBIUS items being held for patron pick-ups.
If you are unfamiliar with how to place a hold on an item in a patron's record, please see either Corky or myself and we will show you how.

FYI...Spring 2006 schedule information.
There are only a limited number of spring 2006 class schedules to go around. The students can access the schedule online and it is now available as a PDF format. Please encourage the students to access the schedule online, but if they really need a "hard copy" of it direct them to student services.
We do have a printed version of the spring 2006 schedule on the cabinet behind the circulation desk for students to use in the LRC. Please hold the students ID while they look at it so that we are guaranteed to get it back because this is our only copy.
Thank you,
Amy Landon
