  • Cooling the Classroom Projector

Media Guru Pedigo has advised me that we should turn off the classroom projector between tours. This allows the bulb to cool. If an incoming tour will arrive in 10 minutes or less, it is OK to leave the projector running.
  • Station Three is moving!

Several staff members have noticed that patrons tend to go to the East end of the Service Desk more than the Circle, so beginning on Monday, Oct. 3, Station Three on the Service Desk will now be the multimedia computer next to Station one, all staff who have desk time scheduled on Station Three will use the multimedia computer. Naturally, we may have an occasion where a student, faculty or staff may need to use the multimedia computer, and the old Station three may be used when doing a large off-desk project such as weeding magazines, etc. Thanks! Todd

  • Patrons in distress

I have put into all mailboxes a sheet of paper with general guidelines regarding how to deal with people when they are seriously upset. This document came from the Counselling area. Please take a few minutes just to look it over. There might be a suggestion there that comes in handy some day. Thanks.
  • Wikibooks

WIKIBOOKS TAKES ON TEXTBOOK INDUSTRY The Wikimedia Foundation is attempting to create a comprehensive, kindergarten-to-college curriculum of textbooks that are free and freely distributable, based on an open-source development model. Created in the same mold as the Wikipedia project--the open-source encyclopedia that lets anyone create or edit an article and that now has nearly 747,000 entries in English alone--Wikibooks is still in its earliest stages. Yet because of Wikibooks' digital model, in which material written for the project can be as short or as long as needed, and be easily manipulated, read and edited, some believe it can pose a major challenge to the publishing industry's hold on the world of textbooks. The hope is that by turning the Wikibooks keys over to a worldwide community of writers and editors, the project will eventually contain tens of thousands of books and smaller entries on a wide range of topics. In each case, the idea is that any Wikibooks reader could create his or her own book or make edits to an existing title. [SOURCE: C-Net|News.com, AUTHOR: Daniel Terdiman]
  • overdue notes...

Thanks to everyone who has been leaving me notes about returned overdue items -- one more thing to add on this subject: Please remember that all overdue reserve item notes should go to Amy, since she manages that section. When you write or print out the note, please take a few second to look and see whether the item was a reserve one, and then pass along the note. Thanks! Todd
  • Southern Reserve

If students come in looking for a CD that is suppose to be on reserve for Southern, there is no such thing on reserve for her class as of right now. I am waiting to hear back from her and I will let you now as soon as I hear something. Thanks, Amy Landon
  • Prison Day

"Prison Day" was a success. Thanks to everyone who participated. We had SEVERAL students ask about the display and about us. I have pictures of the day and if you want them, let me know. You guys are a great staff!!!

  • Saturday priorities

All Saturday staff: If it is not busy, please shelve any books on the shelving truck, and shelf-read the collection -- the G's in particular need some work. Thanks! Todd
  • Money drawer off again

There was a difference of $13.88 in the money drawer this morning -- Please make sure you are marking down all monies received for printouts, copies, etc.

  • Dental Students and Journal of Periodontology

At the bottom of the main LRC webpage there is a link to Online Periodicals With our print subscriptions we are supposed to have online access to all of these titles. As you can see, I have only set up access to three: Inc Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy Journal of Periodontology When I have time I will try to figure out how to access other titles. For now, the link to Journal of Periodontology works great and Dental Students may ask about it. No login is needed to get to the full text articles.
  • Urban Legends

Surf on over to the LRC Webpage and Click on: Helpful Research Links Look under Reference for the link to Snopes Now you can check the validity of all those Urban Legends and Warnings that you see on the Internet and receive in email.
  • Missing, but now found...

Whenever a book with a "missing" status is found (usually when it is checked in on Millennium), be sure to let Corky know the title of the book so he can make sure that a duplicate copy is not ordered.
  • Appraising an old book.

Alice Jefferson has brought me an old book which looks like it could be a Longfellow first edition. Any ideas about how to find its value? Mike
  • Display Messages

We have changed the way we add display notes to individual records (this is done when we put them in the diplay cases so that we know where the book is). From now on, when someone takes a book out of the display case (or even if it isn't taken from a display case) and checks it out, you will be asked "status is on display do you want to clear it". Answer yes to this question. This clears the display status and we will not think that it is still on display when it really is not. Hopefully this will make things better as far as keeping the display messages as current as possible.
