Banking Update

I'm sure that all of you faithful readers of my Christian financial blog will recall that just a few days ago I wrote a post about the confusing mess that I had to deal with in order to attempt to order and receive my new deposit slips for my checking account.  After writing my post the other day, I decided that I was going to at least give a call to the bank the next day after work in order to find out if there was any kind of update on the status of my deposit slip request.  Now that things are said and done, I'm pretty glad that I called, not because I have received my deposit slips but because I now really know what the situation is that is holding things up.  I decided to call the bank after having a little lunch out downtown on Friday.  The woman who I spoke to knew immediately who I was because I had been into the particular bank branch that she works at several times inquiring about this deposit slip debacle.  While she had me on hold looking up information, I decided that since our town is only a couple of miles across, I would make a right turn rather than a left and head over to the bank branch to talk face to face.  By the time I had arrived at the bank, I was still on hold, and the bank manager who I had been on hold with gave me an awfully distressed look when I walked in the door of the branch and plopped myself down at her desk.  She had a look of frustration that was right on par with my own.  As it turns out, my deposit slips had been ordered and returned to the shipping branch for the third time.  For some reason, they just can't seem to get to me.  Normally I wouldn't have really cared, but on this particular day I learned that due to a merger of several banks in three different regions of the country, I can no longer make deposits into my account in Indiana which happened to have been opened in Indiana without an official pre-printed deposit slip with my name, account number, and routing number on it.  That's right, my bank that holds every penny to my name will not let me make a deposit without this slip.  They will not even allow me to use one of their "other" deposit slips where you write in your own information.  The only explanation that they could give me about the whys and howsos of the situation was just totally unsatisfying.  The bank manager was doing her best to try and help me though and ended up on the phone with the bank manager of the branch of the bank where I opened my account down in Florida.  Having explained the situation, she asked for that branch to place the order for my new deposit slips with the correct date, etc. and to have them sent to the branch of the bank up here so that we can make sure that they arrive.  She also thankfully asked for the deposit slips to be sent at some priority shipping rate at no extra charge to me.  Note that this was all happening around quarter to five on a Friday afternoon, so I defeatedly asked and was assured that none of this would even been thought about at the other brank in Florida until Monday.  The problem however is that I'm going to be going out of town for five days next week, so I won't even be around to go and pick up the deposit slips from the branch of the bank here when they arrive.  Therefore, I can't deposit my paycheck from this week or next week until the week following that.  How ridiculous is this I ask you!  Anyways, I tried to keep my cool the best that I could, even though this was an extraordinarily odd and upsetting situation.  My first instinct was to tell them that I wanted to close my account at that very minute.  Had it not been for my thoughts about all the direct debits and automatic bill payments that I have coming out of that account, I would have probably done so.  I thought about the hassle of closing the account, finding another bank that was convenient for me, ordering new checks, changing all my information, and contacting every single company or whathaveyou that I do any kind of money exchanging business with.  The shear amount of work that that would entail helped me to keep calm and not close the account.  But, I'm telling you that if those deposit slips don't show up by the time that I get back from visiting my family up in New York, the account is being closed, and we'll see how the bank likes that.
