  • Kazaa: Filed under the Programs for Idiots section

I used to use Kazaa. I might have even taken an mp3 or two. But that was AGES ago. Why haven't I used it in a good four years? Because "the industry" knows about it. Heck yes I want free music. But as I said in a post a few days ago I don't mind paying $.08 for a song on allofmp3.com. I do mind paying a $1 for a song I might listen to a few times. What really baffles me is that Kazaa THINKS they will make money again. Legally. Hah! You retards--think about Napster. Gee, all the free stuff is gone, maybe I should stay here and pay for it. Hell no. That's why Kazaa even grew in the first place--because Napster got taken down by the man. Don't get me wrong--if I were The Man, I'd do my best to get sites like that shut down too. I do not blame them one bit for trying to stop people from taking the income away. I'm just astonished by the sheer stupidity of Sharman Network. You're not going to make any money! I know you just had to may $115m but you're sure as hell not going to make any of it back by playing legally. Sorry.
  • Project Runway: Episode 3

Good thing there were dogs in last night's episode or I would have fallen asleep. Of course the drama right now wasn't at all about plumpy going home but about who commited the fashion felony and will be sent home next week for it. Rumors are flying that it was Keith (big shocker) but he causes too much drama for the show and I have a hard time believing he'd be kicked off. Plus, he's so arrogant about his own clothes that it's hard for me to believe he'd even consider stealing someone else's. I'm hoping the reason for the kick-off is because people are physically fighting. That would be hot--the two blonde ladies. Ooh la la. Guess I'll have to watch next week.
  • Amazon Movie Service

Apparently Amazon is getting ready to launch their movie service. Good for them. Last I had heard Apple was very close to reaching such a deal with the movie industry but they wanted Apple to charge more than $10/ea. Who knows what Amazon will charge. To me it's pretty simple. People are ALWAYS going to find a way to get your stuff for free. Whether it's software, music, movies, it doesn't matter. There are always going to be people who have the time, the brains and the energy to getting around whatever you do to stop them. PLUS there are a lot more of them trying to get it than there are of you trying to protect it. I can tell you this though: if I sell blue widgets with a 100% profit for $20 and I'm selling 5,000 I would much rather sell 100,000 widgets at $10. It's like with the mp3s--why should I waste my time trying to pirate one when I can buy iit for 8 cents on allofmp3.com? If the movie industry really wants to make money then they have to have start living in reality and get out of their fantasy world.
  • Growing Discontent

I can't wait to go back to school. It's not that I mind the real world--really, having a non-futon couch is fine with me, but I'm just tired of it. I'm tired of worrying almost exclusively about money or all of the other "adult" type things that go with, well, being an adult. More than anything I'm ready for a fresh start. Not to say things are bad here and I need a fresh start but I grow more restless every day that I'm in Florida. My life is going totally nowhere right now and being aware of that really sucks.
  • Word Game

Here's a fun little word game. E as in Eh? (A) A is in Are (R) S as in See (C) E as in Eye (I) E as Elle (L) Y as in You (U) W as in Why (Y) Can you think of any more?
  • Plesk 500 Internal Server Error: Overloaded Server

So we just bought some new sites at work. I had written a simple htaccess file chock full of 301 redirects. Suddenly though I get this Server Error (500) saying the server is either overloaded or there's a problem with a CGI script. Knowing damn well we didn't have any CGI scripts running (what is this 1988?) or that CGI was even installed on the server I figured the problem HAD to be the overload. So I go in and delete my htaccess file. Same problem. Reboot the server to clear out the server cache in case my htaccess file got stuck in it. Same problem. Go in with FileZilla to manually hunt for problems. Can't find it. Then lo and behold the problem is that I didn't delete the htaccess file. It told me I did but apparently I did not. It wasn't showing up because I did not have the "Show Hidden Files" thing checked under the "View" option. I'm so mad I could scream. But the problem is now fixed so I won't.
  • One Bad Year

It seems like 2006 is the year people die. Not to say people don't die every year but this year in particular people either I know or people that I know know have been dying. Jamie's Dad. My uncle. Chris' grandfather and major professor. P-Chris' grandmother. Yeah, it's been a rough year.
  • The Death of Bomber

About a week ago the beta fish on my desk died. His name was Bomber and I inherited him from Barbara who inherited him from Liz. I have a couple dozen fish at home so I assumed I would take good care of him. Oops. He did survive for a good three months under my profoundly loving supervision although I hesitate to admit that he had probably been dead for at least three days when I found him. The good news was that his small, lifeless body had already began to sprout with new life. A lot of it. In the form of some sort of dead-fish consuming white mold-looking stuff. I knew there was no replacing Bomber with another fish so I took a handful of Apple Snails from my boss' fishtank. They seem to be doing just fine. My boss had experienced the miracle of life first hand when about 2000 snails showed up. Now they're about the size of quarters and in another couple months I'll probably bring some home for my dining room tank to help control the algae. It's too bad you can't get your snail spayed or neutered though because I don't want thousands of little snails patroling my tank.
  • PPC Tracking (on Paper)

I kid you not, I just had the following conversation:
Hey Mike, I've got a question for you about PPC tracking in (Overture) Console. Here's the situation: Someone clicks on one of our ads. They visit our site and write the website name down on a piece of paper. A few days later they decide to come back and they type the name into that place on the browser where the www is. Are we tracking those PPC hits?
Me: Just so I'm clear, you want to know if someone writes our URL down on a piece of paper after doing a PPC click then returns to our site by typing in the URL if the PPC tracking is getting it?
    Yes
Me: Someone has written our URL down on a piece of paper and you want to know if it's being tracked by PPC.
    Yes.
    Me: Uh...no.
  • Catching up on Lost

Jamie and I are now officially caught up on Lost. I will be the first to admit that I do not have the willpower to avoid reading spoilers so of course I've already read just about every fake spoiler for Season 3. It's funny to me how many people claim to be "in the know" yet have such drastic differences in their spoilers lists. Oh, Kate dies. Oh, Jack dies. Oh, Hurley gets with Kate and then they have a threesome with Jin. Come on. If you don't know, and you probably don't, why write anything about it? I know I'm kind of a hypocrite because I've been doing very similiar things with my own TV show but come on--at least I put that they were just my predictions and were in no way based on any sort of insider knowledge.
  • New Day for Grey's Anatomy

In case you've been living inside of a bubble for the past few months, you need to know that Grey's Anatomy is moving away from Sunday nights at 10pm to Thursdays at 9pm. Personally I liked it behind Desperate Housewives because then I only had to turn on my TV once a week and could catch both shows. I figured Wednesdays would quickly move into the picture now that I'm addicted to Lost but now have I Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursadays all taken by an hour of TV? That sucks. I guess if I had to pick two of the shows it would be Lost and...man, that's a tough choice. DH, when it's "on", is one of the best shows in the history of television. When it's not "on" it's downright painful to watch and you swear to yourself you'll never watch it again. Grey's Anatomy is very predictable and the story moves *really* slowly. They have a hard time focusing one good story. The characters are more interesting than on Desperate Housewives although my choice of the word "interesting" might be bad. More...deep? Dimentional? Something. Maybe because I'm not a desperate housewife I can more closely relate to the characters of GA. Something. I'll probably end up watching all three and finally fullfilling my promise to the TV Gods.
  • Americans More Lonely Than Ever

According to UPI Americans are more lonely than ever. No kidding. We sit in front of computers all day, all our kids have ADHD and we have no morals. Who on earth would possibly want to be friends with us? The article says the study says that we have only two close friends. Who needs more than that? Assuming one of them is your spouse or lover then you have really have enough time to have one other "super" friend. Personally I go through stages of making new friends then "dumping" the ones that aren't working out. That's just me though--and possibly why I only have two close friends.
  • Persevering

Ok, I've come to terms with the fact that Blogiversity is now banished from Google. I am but a mere blogger and I would say the likelyhood that the whole site is no longer showing up is in no way my fault. Maybe I shouldn't have started every entry title for a week with Grey's Anatomy: Some-Name-Here but aside from that I think I'm in the clear. In other news I've been getting these weird "floaters" in my left eye for about two weeks. Ok, there's just one floater but that's more than enough. I realize everyone gets them from time to time but the one I have won't go away. It doesn't help that it's in the dead center of my left eye. I'm hoping it will go away on its own and sooner rather than later since I have to get up in front of a few hundred people next weekend and I don't want them all to think I'm just a nasty tease.
