Four weeks, Four Chapters
Monday, January 31, 2011 6:03 PM
I am happy to report, the first month of my second draft has been a definite success. I met my goal of writing a chapter a week, and when I fell behind I simply put in the extra hours to get myself caught up. I've had to do a lot of work on the weekends or at night, but it's worth it. The more I work at it and start to see this thing take shape, the more rewarding it is. I think I've got a real good thing going here and I'm anxious to keep working. Chapter Five is where the real fun begins.

The most satisfying part so far has been receiving the comments of my readers. Not all have gotten back to me yet, and I haven't been reading their responses in detail but just to get to talk to people about my book is so helpful and freeing. And the best thing yet has been to hear one of my buddies say, "I saw your chapter last night at one and read it straight through. You need to send me the next one. You're leaving me hanging." The most useful comments have been definitely been in the vein of what people think is going to happen, something that already has me making slight adjustments as this draft takes shape, but I have to admit that hearing someone asking for more, was one of the best feelings I've had in a while.

Until next time, I'm Eric and I'm an unpublished author.

One Done

First week of writing went okay. At best. The first chapter is done and about to be e-mailed to my readers. My wife already started it.

I'm hoping to pick up some momentum in weeks two and three (four day weekend around MLK day). Besides today, Saturday, my pick up the slack day, I only wrote two days this week. One day I had a bunch of errands that couldn't wait, another I come home from work with a bad headache and on Friday it just didn't happen.

I'm not totally happy with this first chapter, but I'm going to push through and hope I get some good advice from my readers. I definitely need them to tear this one apart. The beginning may be the weakest part. I ended up splitting the chapter in two. The downside is I've already added a chapter to the task. The upside, I've already started working on the second half, or rather, the second chapter. One very important thing happened this week: I took some time and made a bit of timeline. It's not done because once I'd hashed out the detail I needed for what I was working, on I stopped, but still. This involved sorting out a lot of little details and making some decisions I'd either been putting off, waffling on, or just being general inconsistent with throughout the first draft.

Now for chapter two.

Until next time, I'm Eric and I'm an unpublished author.
