Make A Really Colorful Smokebomb!

Okay, I'd like to start by saying that I take no responsibility for human error that causes injury or property damage. I am going to guide you through a step by step process to make a colorful smoke bomb. You're going to need a few materials before we get started.

  1. KNO3, or Potassium Nitrate, can be found at your local garden store, most hardware stores, or home improvement store as Stump Remover. You may be able to find it at a pharmacy as "saltpeter," or you can purchase it online HERE.
  2. Sugar
  3. Aluminum Foil
  4. Firework fuse
  5. Powdered Organic Dye can be found at a local hobby shop. Orange, Yellow, Red, and Blue seem to work the best.
  6. Stove and pan, or heating plate.
  7. Duct Tape

Once you have all the materials, put your stove on a relatively low heat, 350°F. What you will need to do is then measure out the amount of sugar and KNO3 that you would like to use. You're going to need a 5:3 ratio. It doesn't have to be exact, it could be 2:1, or 3:2, but the more sugar that you have, the slower it will burn. Once you figure that out, put them in the pan that's on the stove top. You're going to want to caramelize the sugar and mix in the KNO3. If the sugar starts to burn then immediately take the pan off and lower the heat and put it back on once it stops. Keep stirring until you have a good paste going, and until all of the sugar and the KNO3 are mixed. Turn off the heat, and mix in the organic dye.

Pour the liquid out onto the aluminum foil. I would suggest cleaning your pan immediately and making sure that none of the mixture gets on anything in your house aside from the aluminum foil.

This is where you can get a little creative. You can shape the liquid into anything you want before it hardens, the shape does effect the burn pattern though I would suggest a cylinder for your first one.

Flatten out the paste into a square on the aluminum foil and cut off the excess. Put the firework fuse in the middle, half on and half off, and then roll up the aluminum foil into a cylinder around the fuse. This will make the paste form kind of a spiral and will make it burn for awhile.... if you want a faster more explosive burn, then you may want to stuff the paste down into a cardboard tube, like a toilet paper tube, make a hole with a pencil in the middle, and stick the fuse down in there.

Now what you're going to want to do is wrap everything up in duct tape, letting only the fuse hang out.

Light and enjoy a big cloud of colorful smoke! Please be careful where you light it!
