Blog Day Afternoon

Take a walk on the mild side.

Snug as a Bug in a Clean Rug

In my new house there is wall-to-wall carpeting. It is all off-white and you know it shows the dirt. It is a nice carpet but it is seven years old and it has seen some living by the people who owned the house previously. (They must have had a pet that was not overly concerned with going outside to do its business.) There are some stains and other blotchy areas. I wanted to rip it out and buy new carpet; my husband wanted to clean it. Since money is tight these days (when isn’t it?) we decided to go ahead and buy a rug cleaning machine. It is a shampoo machine, not a steam cleaner.

We have been cleaning one room at a time each week to see how it would look. It looks pretty good. The machine took out almost all the stains and the carpet really is in good shape. It was a wise, and frugal, decision to clean instead of buying new.

Each week we have to shuffle all the furniture and other stuff from room to room. The strategy of doing only one room a week is working well because the carpet can be exposed to the air for seven days so that it will be completely dry before we put the furniture back. We have only one more room to do and then we are finished. It is good to know that the machine does such a nice job; I know we will have to clean the carpeting from time to time. The rug cleaning machine is the same size as my vacuum cleaner so it doesn’t take up too much room in the closet.

We bought one too and we like being able to clean the carpets when we want and not pay a carpet cleaning service. We are hoping it helps to preserve the life of the carpet too. Great money saving tip!

With a little boy, a granddaughter, a dog and a cat, my carpeting is a wreck! We're in the middle of painting the living room right now, but planned to have a carpet cleaning service come in to the whole house when we're done.

This idea sounds better though. Will you both tell me, please, what kind of carpet cleaners you bought? Parker is yours a steam cleaner? Blogette, is there any reason I should know about NOT to get a steam cleaner?

Thanks you guys!

I had a few criteria when shopping for a deep cleaning vacuum. (1) I wanted a known brand so that I could get the cleaning products at numerous stores and that they would be around for years in the future. (2) The machine had to have a decent-sized water tank that was easily emptied and re-filled. (3) I didn't want to spend more than $200 on it.

I found the BISSELL - ProHeat 2X Upright Deep Cleaner machine at Best Buy, regularly priced at $199.99, but I got it on sale for $179.99. I also buy the Bissell Tough Stain Precleaner which helped on some of the tougher spots. The best spot cleaner that I've found is hydrogen peroxide. Even after the deep cleaning vacuum, I still have a few spots left. I'm going to go after them with the hydrogen peroxide next.

Thanks, Blogette!

To have all three bedrooms, the living room, dining room and family room cleaned professionally would cost right around $150. To do it ourselves with a rental would be back-breaking and cost probably $75 to $100.

Either way, with all the kids and critters it's going to need it again and again, so buying a machine seems smartest. Thanks for the info!
