Blog Day Afternoon

Take a walk on the mild side.

Locking Gas Cap

My husband convinced me it was time to get a locking gas cap for my vehicle. Normally when he ventures into the "paranoid" zone (and he is a frequent visitor), I humor him but don't usually change any of my habits. Now that it is costing about $60 to fill my gas tank, his suggestion has merit. It was easy to find one (apparently the gas cap size is one of the few things that is standard across most vehicles) and not too expensive (about $8). There is a little more hassle at the gas station since I have to take my keys with me, but I do have peace of mind. And so does my husband.

I filled up yesterday for $68.80. Unbelievable! I see folks hauling boats behind their monstrous V8 pickups, and I know they're paying hundreds of dollars for a single day out in the Gulf!

I've seen stuff in the paper and online about gaoline stolen at the pumps, but hadn't heard of increased siphoning. It wouldn't surprise me, though.

I'm with you writer lady. I am so glad I did not buy that SUV I had my eye on about a year ago. At this point, I would have to trade it in anyway! A tank of gas must really crush the wallet right about now.

i'm thinking about riding my bike to the office for the next few weeks before it gets too warm to be enjoyable... then i can use the gas money i save to subsidize my gas purchases when it gets too summery for the bike commute!

also, in the more info than you need department, i just read that gas prices at the end of april this year were up a full 23% from april 2007. that's a lot!

I never thought gas theft would be an issue, but when I think about it, we are all hauling extremely valuable liquids in our gas tanks now. I guess as prices go up, people are getting more and more desperate too. It sounds like the 8 bucks may be worth the peace of mind at this point.

I think I'll ask my neighbors where they got their cars that run on vegetable oil and see if I could get my hands on one. I'd love to see someone try to steal THAT.

When you find out about the veg oil car's source, let us know please. We're very seriously talking about buying an electric car within the next year, but we're still looking around. Thanks!
