Title: RELIGION
Paul Tillich saw the Garden of Eden as fulfilled in the experience of Protestant Christianity. Cast out of monasteries and from feudal society, itinerant monks found themselves exiles from the Great Chain of Being, taking refuge in Calvin’s Geneva, and moving from gardens to cities to ply their trade. Later, many were cast out of the Old World into the New, trekking across the American continent in search of freedom, it was the Protestant poet Milton who suggested in Paradise Lost that Adam and Eve’s exile was as much opportunity as sorrow:
“Some natural tears they dropped, but wiped them soon,
the world was all before them, there to choose…”
