Title: Psychology: Autonomy and Surrender
Humans attempt to maximize both the expression of autonomy and the expression of surrender. Autonomy and surrender are inherent and opposing tendencies, so conflict is inevitable and compromise must be sought. Autonomy refers to the separation from others and the physical environment, with emphasis on independence and aloofness. Surrender refers to functioning leading to merger or union with other people, ideas, or the inanimate environment, with emphasis on dependency. Expressing both characteristics leads to simultaneous differentiation and integration.
