Title: Congress v. Bush

President Bush has been locked in a bitter struggle to remain influential in the political atmosphere of Washington lately. As the newly strengthened Democratic congress plans bills with deadlines on the war in Iraq, Bush pledges to veto them. It is a terrible situation because, while the troops need additional funding from these bills, Bush won't allow them to pass with provisions regarding withdrawl deadlines. Likewise, congress seems unwilling to remove such provisions for the president. Regardless of where you stand on the president, it should be easy to agree that this scenario is all bad for our troops in Iraq. They aren't getting additional funds, and they aren't getting out.

I am by no means a bush or war supporter but, the fact is, we are not getting our troups out of Iraq tomorrow. However, our troops do need financial support yesterday. Although the Democrats are anti war they need to realize the affect that their stand still is having on the people who need to survive in Iraq. If they keep this up, in a year we may not have that many troops to bring home.

That is very true. They don't seem to understand that you can be "anti-war" without being "anti-soldier." They are clearly blending the two together on purpose to force the president to accept a planned withdrawal. I suppose their rationale is that by denying the supplies our troops need now, they are forcing Bush to sign a bill to end the war, which will bring them home sooner. But like you said, if they keep this game up, they may not have any troops left.

*Update* President Bush successfully vetoed the Congressional Bill with provisions stipulating a planned withdrawal of troops. Then, when legislators offered a new bill with a planned troop withdrawal that Bush could waive, he denied them again. This is a much-needed victory for the White House in what has been a stagnant second term. What the president needs now is some progress on the ground in Iraq to push for more funding after September. Congress was forced to pass a Bill void of all troop level plans in order to give our troops the funding they needed. For this reason, we must have immediate results to secure the next round of funding.
