Title: The Correlation between Gas Prices and Approval Ratings

With gas prices consistently topping $3.00 a gallon, our country seems destined for trouble where energy costs are concerned. While President Bush has stated clearly his efforts to fight the rising gas prices, and the strong state of our economy, his approval rating has continued to slide. Top Bush aides believe there is a direct correlation between the oil prices and his lagging approval rating. While all other economic indicators show a strong, healthy economy, Americans prove once again that they are incapable of elementary economics. We rely on a limited supply of oil; while our demand continues to climb. Common sense would suggest that the prices will continue to rise as a result of this situation. President Bush is doing everything in his power to make the public believe he is fighting the gas prices, but in reality, there isn't much he can do.

Your right there isn't much he can do. Some people are saying that if he brings the troops home from iraq then the oil prices will go down. I don't believe tat. I believe the oil prices will stay the same because the iraqies have something to bargain with. I think they are bargaining with us and we are to blind to realize it.

I completely agree that the Iraqies are in deed bargaining with us when it comes to oil. Bush can't do much because he does not run OPEC. However, there is something bush can do. Bush's family controls a large amount of the untapped oil deposits in America. If he wants to help tell him to give the oil to the people, or better yet free the country from oil all together and use alternative sources like Brazil is doing with sugar cane. If they can do it so can we.

First, the oil deposits we currently hold in the United States would not be enough to counter our vast dependence on oil. Also, we are stockpiling our oil reserves as a backup in the event of a supply shock. What if OPEC decided they weren't going to deliver our oil shipment? Do you think we should have a reserve built up for such an emergency? Good, so do I. That's why we do. One thing Bush has done to ease the oil prices is to reduce our additions to the reserves to allow more oil to go to the public. However, even this action proved to have little effect on the rising prices. Killing Al-Qaeda leaders seems to drop the price though...maybe that's what we should focus on.

Are you saying that more blood spilled will equal lower gas prices? Maybe it is time we start using our resources to come up with an alternative.

Of course more blood spilled will mean lower gas prices. It will also mean a safer world for the Iraqi people as long as the blood spilled is terrorist blood. I do agree, we need to put money into alternative research. We have been doing so already, but not in the amounts needed considering our current problems.

I don't believe that killing will equal lower gas prices. For every push there is a pull. If we start killing more what will be the backlash. Yes we killed one terrorist leader but maybe the person that steps in his place will be 1000 times worse which will cause gas prices to sky rocket to all new heights because of a new level of terrorism. I agree that something needs to be done. But the US needs to start playing chess not checkers. Don't just kill one man and expect the game to be over, think three moves ahead and you will quickly win the war.

Well that just sounds like you are advocating killing three terrorists at a time instead of one to get the job done. I agree, but that is still spilled blood. No one is expecting the death of al-Zarqawi to end terrorism in Iraq. We are only hoping to slow their momentum and give the newly appointed government a chance to catch its breath and regroup. We can bring this game of checkers straight into a checkmate, but we must have the Iraqi government right by our side or it will all be in vain.
