Omar Thompson Biography

The eclectic expressions and use of every day items set Omar Thompson a part from other artist in his genre. With his use of discarded items he creates images that not only are delicious to the eyes, but thought provoking.

Born in Miami, Florida, Thompson holds a BA degree in Art Education from Florida A&M University as well as a MFA from The Ohio State University in Columbus respectively. He has taught at the college level for Hampton University, The New World School of Art in Miami, Florida and The Marist School in Atlanta Georgia. He is a professor of African American art and ceramics at Florida A and M University, but is looking into new avenues to continuing his art. A long with his teaching career he owns an operates an art studio located in railroad square in Tallahassee, Fl.
Omar Thompson actively works on private and public commissions. His most famous piece, Shoe Shine for Mr. Charlie, won best of show at the Mobile Museum of Art. The piece, created from wood, shoes, and photo images, represents the reality of that era. The era when blacks had meaningless jobs and caught in the shuffle of no names and degradation. The piece is from the “America’s Backyard” collection. The collection is reflection of the hardships confronted in the fight to become part of an inclusive society of United States citizens.
Omar Thompson has been honored with several awards and exhibitions locally and nationally to include The High Museum of Art, Stanford University, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. His work can be found in many private and corporate collections such as Cassandra Mills, The Atlanta Life Insurance Co, Singer/writer India Arie and also maintains The Anheuser Busch Company in St. Louis Mo.
