Title: BCS Fails Again
For all of you college football fans out there who care about the championship game, even when your team isn't in it: I feel your pain. This year wasn't the first time and it won't be the last, when the Bowl Championship Series will fail us in our pursuit for college football's best. In case you are unaware of what I'm talking about, the University of Florida was chosen to jump Michigan in the BCS rankings after a poorly won game against Arkansas last week. Nevermind that Michigan is also a 1-loss team, and their only loss was to the number 1 team, on the road, by 3 points. Need I say more? I have the distinct feeling this year will resemble the USC/ OU "game" that can really have only been described as a shellacking. I hope UF gets man-handled beyond all repair to prove once and for all that the only true system is a playoff system. But really, even if Florida were to win the game, it doesn't prove that they deserved the title over Michigan, the only way to quiet all discontent about the truly deserving team is to have a PLAYOFF! I hope we are only a few more years away from the change. Each year that passes we gain more and more support for a playoff from teams, fans, coaches, etc who have dealt with the wrath of the computer.
now that we have seen all these teams play, can you say the bcs has failed; obvious joke. A playoff may be the best option which would give small teams like boise state a chance to prove themselves but, when it comes down to it the bcs is driven by money, as is all of college football. The big schools have the big money and the big boosters are not going to risk their investment in a school by implementing a playoffs system that would make college football, God for bid, fair. This is how the big schools are allow to keep getting the top player because they can sell a real shot at a national title along with greater recognition. If it was a leveled playing field boise state would probably be a dynasty for years to come. They have had two undefeated, national title worthy seasons, yet they dont get the recruits. This is because they can't sell the dream of the title and the national spot light.
It is very true that Boise State has been worthy of a real championship bid for at least two years now. College football is, as you said, driven by money. I do think that it is possible to design a playoff/ bowl combination so that teams that don't make the playoff will still be able to make money at a bowl game. Take Florida State for instance. They played at the Emerald Bowl, and made only a modest amount of money. Even if we had a playoff in place, their record wouldn't have been good enough to make it in...so they could have still played in the emerald bowl. This way, teams like Boise State would have a real chance at making their own destiny, without disrupting the cash flows of bigger, more recognized schools. I think it could work out best for all involved.
