Title: chemistry: making or breaking bonds
A chemical reaction by definition, involves making or breaking bonds between atoms. Thus mechanistic research in chemistry is really the study of how bonds are made and broken. The "how" usually includes the spatial question of which atoms are connected to which and in what three dimensional geometry, but it might also include the much more difficult to answer temporal question of the timing with which bonds are made and broken.
